Expansion anchors work by expanding inside a pre-drilled hole when tightened. As the bolt or nut is turned, the expansion sleeve or clip presses tightly against the interior walls of the concrete hole, creating a secure friction grip that prevents pullout.
Wedge anchors are heavy-duty fasteners ideal for solid concrete substrates, offering high load capacities. Molly anchors, on the other hand, are hollow wall anchors designed for medium-duty fixtures in drywall, plaster, and hollow block environments.
As a general rule, the hole depth should exceed the embedment depth of the anchor by at least one bolt diameter. It is critical to clean all dust and debris out of the hole before inserting the anchor to ensure maximum holding power.
Most mechanical expansion anchors, like wedge anchors, are permanent and cannot be cleanly extracted or reused. For applications requiring removal, screw-type concrete anchors (concrete screws) should be utilized, as they can be backed out of the hole.
